Bocas del Toro: A Geographic and Administrative Overview
Discovering Bocas del Toro
Bocas del Toro is a beautiful province in Panama, known for its stunning landscapes and rich history. It was founded in 1903 and is a mix of different cultures and natural beauty. The history of Bocas del Toro goes back to 1502 when Christopher Columbus first visited the bay and the island that now carry his name. Over time, the area attracted English sailors, American and German traders, and Jamaican missionaries. By the 19th century, fishermen from Nicaragua and Colombia came to the region, followed by immigrants from the Antilles, all adding to the province’s unique culture.
Historical Highlights
In the late 1800s, banana farming grew in the Bay of Almirante and Chiriquí Lagoon, bringing economic growth to the region. By 1904, the construction of the Municipal Palace (Gobernación) and its park marked an important architectural milestone, completed in 1906. During this period, Bocas del Toro city became well-known as the base for the United Fruit Company and home to the bilingual newspaper, The Central American Express.
While banana exports moved to the port of Almirante between 1909 and 1915, the government continued to operate from Isla Colón, showing its lasting significance.
